always where the wild things are…

Following the recent inclination of ‘self-love’ and healing poetry made popular by the Pinterest and Tumblr staple ‘Milk and Honey’ by Rupi Kaur ( which I still have to read) poetry has become and is becoming increasingly more read. Something I, as an avid poetry reader is thoroughly appreciating.

Preparing My Daughter For Rain is one I’ve wanted to read for a while, descibed as a book of lessons dedicated to future daughters on how to survive and heal, I  am very happy I finally got around to reading it because it has certainly been a worthwhile experience. The book follows a very simple layout, structured poems for the body, heart, land and soul.
“You were the inspiration for all of the earth, every rolling hill and rushing stream.”
Key Ballah is a very talented poet, her words hit just as they should and flow so smoothly. However, it was during the ‘Land’ section of the book that Ballah’s writing really shined. She was able to capture the essence of what it means to be a woman of colour in the western world, what it means to be the child of immigrants, and what it means to struggle with self-identity between where you were raised and your true heritage.

“Have you ever looked at your body without the lens of your colonised mind?”
It was a short and sweet collection that can easily be finished within one sitting easily. There were some sections that fell flat and didn’t have the same inspiration behind it, but if you are looking for a fix of self-love and a more transcendent side of womanhood and God this is the perfect place to start.
What really resonated with me whilst reading was the underlying was the pride of what It means to be a woman, what it means to be a daughter and ultimately a mother one day.

“Don't be concerned with other women's beauty. Only admire God's amazing work and wish them well., this earth was made to bite us in half and grind us to bone, but we were made to be kind.”
Preparing My Daughter For Rain is an astounding collection of thought-provoking love letters for all daughters of the world, beautifully crafted as it simply condenses what it means to be a woman.

Stay wild x
